This strategy involves denying any wrongdoing, attacking the character of the person confronting them, and then reversing roles to portray themselves as the victim and the accuser as the offender. For example, if a victim of narcissistic abuse points out their partner's abusive behavior, the narcissist might deny the abuse, accuse the victim of making it up (gaslighting), and then claim they are the ones being attacked or mistreated. This tactic undermines the victim's concerns, shifts the blame, and maintains the narcissist's control by isolating the victim and damaging their self-esteem and perception of reality.
