You could plant the cabombas inside a glass vase or terra cotta pot that you can submerge. You could silicone the pot (“underwater planter”) on a slab of rock and you could just take it in and out.

I've had guppies for many years. Something that helps if they start eating them is just cave like hiding space. I put a basic castle, they no longer ate them once the parents had somewhere to hide. ❤️
