I've seen similar. Ford 4.6 kept having valve cover leaks because the engine builder didn't shorten the timing cover when the heads were machined.

Ran into a similar problem on an Audi 4.2; someone apparently broke a cam cover, replaced it with a junkyard part. Leaked profusely & wiped both cams!
