![Genital Looking Causes Blindness? 🤔 Haya (shyness, modesty and self-restraint) is a praiseworthy virtue in Islam but it is interpreted differently amongst scholars, peoples and cultures. There are several weak and fabricated hadiths about shyness during intimacy which classical scholars narrated in their books of fiqh (Islamic law) and ilm al-bah (erotology), such as the unreliable hadiths that state genital looking causes blindness and muteness. Egyptian scholar and student of Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, Abdul Qadir al-Shadhili said, “A man should not look at his private parts [when intimate], and he should not look at the genitals of his woman during intimacy, as this will cause blindness and make the child blind. As it was reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said this to Ali in his counsel. When [Imam] Malik was asked about this, he said it was specific for him.” Egyptian Maliki scholar Asbagh ibn al-Faraj was asked, ‘Can a man look at a woman’s genitals when intimate?’ He replied, ‘Yes, he can even lick it with his tongue.” It was said to Asbagh, “Some people dislike it [i.e. the act of oral sex]. Asbagh said, “The scholars of medicine dislike it, however the scholars of religious knowledge, they see nothing wrong with it, nor do they say it is disliked.” Andalusian Maliki jurist Qadi Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi said, “The opinion that it is disliked [to look at the genitalia] is stronger because there is a report. And even though it may not be authentic regarding it being disliked, and the report is unreliable. It is the opinion amongst scholars based on reason and analogy.” Al-Shadhili narrated some other unreliable hadiths on this matter, namely, “When you have sex with your wife, you should not look at her private parts as it would make you blind. And you should not speak too much as it would make you mute,” and “Do not look at your wife’s genitals. If you look at the vulva it will cause blindness in the child.” Iraqi hadith scholar Ibn al-Jawzi reported these hadiths are forged, and not actual statements of the Prophet (pbuh).
