@nakano2023: As I am on the shores of Nishikinohama Beach Park, I’m not just at a beautiful seaside in Kaizuka city; I am stepping into the echoes of Japan’s vibrant past. This isn’t just any stretch of sand and sea; it’s a storied haven that dates back to the Yayoi period, roughly between 300 BC and 300 AD, when the region thrived with burgeoning settlements fueled by the bounty of the sea. In the subsequent Nara (710-794) and Heian (794-1185) periods, Nishikinohama was a crucial artery in the flow of commerce and culture, as maritime trade linked distant shores to the heart of Japan. The Kamakura period (1185-1333) saw this beach witness to the comings and goings of feudal lords and their armadas, as they navigated the intricate tides of power and influence. By the time the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1600) unfurled, the beach was more than a strategic point; it became a vital lookout, ever-vigilant for the sails of friend and foe alike against a backdrop of civil strife. Yet, as the Edo period (1603-1868) brought about a measure of peace, Nishikinohama’s sands transformed from a martial vantage point to a locale of leisure and festivities, integrating into the fabric of daily life and joy. The modernizing waves of the Meiji era (1868-1912) washed over Japan, and Nishikohama, recognized for its unrivaled natural splendor, was honored as a site of scenic beauty. The conservation efforts that began then have allowed the whispering pines that line the beach, some standing for centuries, to remain sentinels of history. Today, I, Sumiko Nakano, am part of this continuum. Each step I take on Nishikinohama is a stride through time, a personal connection to the dynamic flow of history that this beach has borne witness to. From the Yayoi fisherfolk to modern-day visitors seeking tranquility, these sands are a manuscript of natural and human history, where each grain tells a story of endurance, evolution, and the timeless allure of the ocean’s edge. Here, history is not just recounted; it is felt. #sumikonakano #silentlioness #nishikinohamabeach #osaka #japan
