@davesautocenter: Broken belt and Lack of maintenance, and a first time customer. Do you tell them and risk being seen as someone who wants to sell everything or do you just fix what is broke? #autoshop #autorepair #autocenter #carrepair
Customers don’t care about their cars until it actually starts to fail.

Give them a free inspection, explain how you aren’t trying to sell them anything but want them to see what you found. Showing the dangers will do a lot, especially if you have examples of what happens

For me it comes down to trust. Some shops will advise on repairs that aren’t warrented such as cabin air filter for $60 when I can do it myself for $10. I’ll listen if the mechanic is solid with me.

CALL THEM IN show them what you and your technicians see you can't lie to them if they see it too and it creates an entirely new level of trust and retention

A good service advisor will have already prepped the customer for a multipoint inspection

Offer a scheduled maintenance visit with them. Where they are called when it’s time to bring it in for routine inspection. My shop does that and brings these small items to my attention before a fail

Or the customer brings it into a place and says oil change and they tell her or him it needs a belt, but she refuses

I believe belt manufacturers also recommend tensioner replacement at the same time also

I feel like honestly it’s because of how good drive belts have become that technicians don’t even look at them anymore I see cars with original belts 200 k in my dealership all day

You should have a tv in the customer waiting room with little educational tips like this to make the customer get of the comfort zone to as questions

Depends on the person, I know to listen for odd noises like a belt squeal or idler bearing so I’m not going to replace them until then. I’ve owned so many vehicles in the 3-400+ km

I do that on mine. You’re right there at it. And they have the same wear as the belt

I made the mistake of leaving our sales guy’s card on a couple cars with bald tires in a parking lot. After 1 very angry phone call I gave him the rest of his cards back.
