I wish everyone could know Walter. This was one of the most impactful interviews I’ve done. Walter was arrested and incarcerated at 17. He’s now working to give back to society, and find his place in the world helping others adjust to society after incarceration. On average 600,000 people are released from state and federal prisons each year. ARC does the most important work of helping formerly and currently incarcerated people to thrive by providing a support network of reentry services and advocacy in transforming the criminal justice system. During incarceration many human rights abuses occur that will often never be spoken about in daylight. Walter spent 22.5 hours a day confined to a prison cell with no sunlight for 29 years. Walter spoke of many human rights abuses he experienced and witnessed in solitary confinement including being beaten until he was black and blue, hogtied, and left naked in the showers with no medical attention over night. He spoke of a man suffering from severe mental illness in a cell next to him being put in scalding water where he suffered third degree burns over his entire body. He witnessed many men k*ll themselves and immense psychological suffering. He spoke of guards intentionally putting known enemies in the yard together to instigate fights, filming them, and betting money on the outcome of fights. He also spoke of guards that would man the gun towers during yard time and openly joked around about keeping score in their shooting of prisoners. He’s currently writing a book that I cannot wait to read. Walter is full of light. I am so grateful to have met him, and for his second chance at life. Thank you to ARC who is making the biggest impact in so many lives.
