This recording was organically born from Randy Newman and I's beautiful friendship and our shared connection to the musical legacy of Ray Charles. The song and its stunning visuals, directed by David Henry Gerson, examine loneliness in the heart of cities, multi generational separation, the richness and power of melancholy and all the musical and tonal hues associated with it. Depicting two human beings crying out, finding each other and birthing catharsis through melancholy expression. Often the structures of contemporary society can dull the voice of reflection but in hearing the blues inflection, the voice is awakened again.  The 12 bar minor blues form can definitively underscore modern cosmopolitan life while still somehow remaining foundational early American root music. This song was captured in a single take without rehearsal, surrounding a couple standing microphones at Randy's house, in the essence the tradition of recorded music making.
