The House on Thursday afternoon approved the "big, beautiful" tax and spending cuts legislation, sending the sweeping reconciliation bill to President Trump's desk ahead of the self-imposed July 4 deadline. The vote was 218–214 with two Republicans joining all Democrats in opposition: Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA) and Thomas Massie (KY). It capped a lengthy — and often contentious — legislative process for Republicans to deliver on many of the president's campaign promises through the government trifecta they secured in November. The Senate narrowly approved an amended version of the bill in a 51–50 tally on Tuesday that required Vice President JD Vance to cast the tiebreaking vote, sending the measure back to the House. House Republican leaders held open two procedural votes for about 9 hours and 6 hours, respectively, marking some of the longest votes in modern history, as they tried to cajole GOP holdouts to accept the Senate changes to the bill. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) secured the votes early Thursday morning, and the House voted 219–213 at 3:23am ET to adopt the rule for the bill, putting it on a glide path to passage. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) then further delayed its passage by delivering a record-breaking "magic minute," speaking for 8 hours and 44 minutes under the custom that allows House leaders to talk for as long as they like. The bill permanently extends the 2017 tax cuts that are slated to sunset at the end of the year, increases the SALT deduction and eliminates taxes on tips and overtime. It also contains hundreds of billions of dollars in additional funding for the Pentagon and border security. To help offset the cost, the bill downsizes safety-net programs like Medicaid and SNAP and phases out clean energy tax credits, among other spending cuts. It also raises the debt ceiling by another $5 trillion, marking the largest specified increase in history. The legislation will add nearly $3.3 trillion to the deficit over a decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The CBO also estimates that it will result in 11.8 million Americans losing their health insurance by 2034, largely due to the Medicaid cuts. #houseofrepresentatives #congress #cspan
