I had no idea about indexation and they did make it seem like no big deal to have a HECS debt. There was no mention of indexation at all and I feel like it was hidden from us on purpose.

Paid 6k off last financial year and they added 5.5k on it because of inflation. It’s an absolute disgrace! Can’t afford to buy a house or rent either.

Literally dropped out of uni, after realising how everything actually worked. Hs made it seem like the end of the world if you didn’t go to uni & so many ppl have degrees and still struggle.

But they act like people don’t know about the indexation at all. People had an idea about the indexation, but it was never that high, but they don’t make the information easily accessible, especially

Why didn’t they talk about the fact that the money is taken out of our pay checks but isn’t applied until after our debts are indexed at the end of every FY?

Instead getting your tax return in full, pay off your hex in full. 4-5 tax returns and you’re good to go after that

HECS debt should be tax deductible. Ie if you make 100,000 pay 10,000 then you should be taxed at 90,000 . Govt gives no incentive to reduce the costs!

Even if she gets a job in psychology agree and it pays a great amount. She’ll get taxed horrendously while she also has other expenses. The advantage of buying a house will take her 50 yrs.

It’s definitely not explained to students adequately, I was 18 when I took mine out and had no idea. As opposed to when you take out a mortgage every is very upfront.

Working at a university, I've seen unis slowly become a business model rather than an institution for education. Education should never be charged.
