It truly baffles the mind that humans lived thousands of years in pretty advanced societies without 0 as a number.

Microsoft Copilot :
The delay in recognizing zero as a number can be attributed to the fact that zero is an abstract concept. It represents both absence and a number itself, which took longer to understand.

That’s so cool! AFAIK, the only 3 languages/civilizations that independently came up with the concept of zero were Arabic, Chinese, and Maya.

The Swedish word for numbers is “siffror” in plural and “siffra” in singular. Could that originate from “sifr”?

Zero doesn’t really become essential until algebra, which makes sense why the word would come from Arabic

wait so this may be a stupid question, but before 0 was really around, what was used for numbers with 0 in it? eg 10, 20, etc

zero in Vietnamese is không (空), which that character is also used as the translation for the Buddhist śūnya(-ta). idk if it's the actual etymology, but it's cool to consider
