Do you think math is invented or discovered?

In swedish we call them complex numbers as well as imaginary numbers

no one teaches that imaginary numbers are actually imaginary

Isn’t English a base 12 language? All numbers from 1-12 have distinct names, and we only switch to base 10 on 13 and onward

Imaginary numbers aren’t “real” in a physical sense because they can’t be measured right?

to anyone confused about what imaginary numbers are, theyre just quaternions with j and k coefficients of 0 ☺️👍

well like i guess it depends on how you define "real". like obviously imaginary numbers aren't cardinal as in they don't refer to quantities of real objects, you can't have 2i potatoes

I mean it also depends on your definition of real and imaginary.

and this is why I failed math. I kept asking why. I didn't like the answer because I say so. none of it made any sense.

i mean there’s research that indicates numerosity is a primary visual feature which would seem to imply there’s a concept of number or quantity that exists pre-linguistically

Imaginary numbers are things I use in Quantum Mechanics a LOT as a physics student. It’s just sqrt(-1) at the end of the day.

in any post-highschool math course, ‘imaginary’ numbers are referred to as complex

As physics major, they are imaginary. There is no number that can be squared to a negative, you have to imagine the hypothetical number that could.
