@katyrobinbird: You make them feel safe enough they can be honest with you, even when it comes out a lil rough. There’s often something deeper going on. If this happens to you, are not alone, it’s universal. My singing sucks, but I’ve heard grammy winners who say their kids do this too. If your kid does it to you, know that I have yet to meet a parent who can’t relate. Theories about why kids do this range from it being an expression of emerging independence, to the child’s desire for you to focus on them, to a sign that a ability to decree what they here is developing. In this moment, I wanted to respect how Emi was expressing herself and telling me to stop (even though I did keep forgetting- these 2 moments are about 15 mins apart) because I don’t know in that moment what might be the root of it. It could be that she was feeling scared on the ski run as lots of people had just passed us going fast, and she wanted to know my attention was helping keep her safe. It could be that I was just botching her 2 most favorite songs. I like to sing aloud often despite not being able to carry a tune. Sometimes my kids join me, sometimes they yell STOP as loud as they can.
