My Son Naamksi – Many Faces My son’s name is Naamksi, which means lizard in Piikani. But when you sit with the word, when you break it apart in the way our language teaches us to listen deeply, it speaks of many faces or even no face, a being of many forms and hidden knowledge. In our Blackfeet ways, the lizard is more than just an animal; it is a weather predictor, a future seer, a holy being that teaches us about adaptability, survival, and reading the signs of the earth. In our territory, they were known to predict weather patterns and changes long before the storm clouds rolled in. They remind us to stay alert, to feel the subtle shifts around us, and to live in harmony with the natural world. The Naamski holds a sacred place in our stories; it comes with the teaching that if we take care of ourselves and walk with good intentions for others, we are given the ability to sense what’s ahead and lead wisely. This is how I see my son. He carries a quiet strength. A knowing that hasn’t fully spoken yet. But I believe deeply that he will be a leader for our people, not in the way that shouts, but in the way that sees. He holds the gift of presence, of connection, of listening to the winds before they turn. That’s how I see my son. A young leader in the making, even if he doesn’t know it yet.
