A few months ago, if you'd asked me if I was capable of recording myself brushing my teeth for more than 10 seconds, I'd have laughed and, depending on my mood, potentially spit in your face. Ten seconds? How do you focus on filming while still moving the toothbrush around and stuff? I tried and tried, but each time, I dropped my phone or my toothbrush (or both!) out of sheer concentration. For weeks, I didn't make it past 7 seconds. I was ashamed. Yet I kept at it. Without telling my family, friends, or colleagues, I practiced and practiced every night. Soon I hit 7.5 seconds... then 8. Suddenly, 10 didn't seem so far out of reach.

"Maybe you CAN do this, after all!" I thought. That is, until my greatest setback of them all—a bad double-drop (phone and toothbrush) just three seconds into an attempt. I was devastated. It felt like my hours of practice had all been for nothing. I didn't even pick up the toothbrush for a week after that, instead opting to brush with the only other thing I knew—my phone. Ow. Do not recommend. After a week was up, though, I knew I had to get back on the horse. So, I got up, walked into the bathroom, pressed record, and... voila. 13.8 seconds. This number would have felt unimaginable to me just weeks, days.. heck, *hours* before. Now? This is normal to me. Oh yeah, I do remember that time I recorded a 13.8-second video of me brushing my teeth. What about it? That was me talking just then. This story serves as a reminder that mentality is everything. If you believe that even trying to do something is worthwhile, you have a much greater probability of success. As many of you head into stressful periods at work or final exams, remember that even if you drop your phone and toothbrush three seconds in (I guess the equivalent here would be getting put on a PIP or realizing you need a 97 to get an A), you can find a way to get through it. ✌️
