@corycalendinemd: Common Bone Disease 🔴 Classic Paget disease of bone occurs in approximately 1 percent of people older than 40 in the United States. Scientists estimate that about 1 million people in this country have the disease. It is most common in people of western European heritage. Early-onset Paget disease of bone is much rarer.S Paget's disease of bone interferes with your body's normal recycling process as new bone tissue gradually replaces older bone tissue. Bones can become fragile/deformed, accelerating joint arthritis damage How Common is #PagetDisease Risk of Paget's #bonedisease increases with age and occurs in ~1% of adults >40. In most cases, Paget's disease is asymptomatic and progresses slowly. Possible complications include: - Fractures/ bone deformities (leg bowing): bones break more easily, and extra blood vessels in these deformed bones cause them to bleed more during repair surgeries. - Osteoarthritis: Misshapen bones increase stress on joints leading to #osteoarthritis damage - Neurological problems: Bone overgrowth can compress/damage nerves causing pain/weakness/tingling (arm, leg, hearing loss) - Heart failure - Bone cancer (up to 1%) Diagnosis/Imaging: first indication of #Pagetsdisease of bone is often abnormalities found on X-rays (done for other reasons). X-ray can show areas of bone breakdown, enlargement of bone/deformities and/or long bone bowing Bone scan. Treatment If disease is active — elevated alkaline phosphatase level — and is affecting high-risk sites treatment may be indicated - Medications: #Osteoporosis drugs (bisphosphonates). If bisphosphonates aren't tolerated, calcitonin (Miacalcin), may be prescribed - Surgery: In rare cases, surgery might be required to: - repair fractures - Replace joints damaged by severe #arthritis (Total #KneeReplacement shown) - Realign deformed bones - Reduce pressure on nerves .
