He would just say “I’m sorry, I just didn’t think about it” and then I’d keep asking questions to gauge if he felt actual remorse. He’d get mad at me for “berating him” and then I’d have to apologize

Actually apologize like this at some point. It takes around 40 to 120 seconds to do it as the book says. You truly have to have the script in your head and practice it.
