@vaultermagazine: Video by @gerrittbake —— “I’ve never seen the pole bend that much and not break…” Watching my son almost kill himself was funny…after the fact. But seeing it happen in slow motion was scary as hell. He’s been competing in pole vault for a few years. This kid is committed. He’s been going to an academy year round. He practices 4-5 times a week. And on the other days, he does drills at home. Today, he had his third meet of the season. He was excited. I was excited. But, as he was warming up, I noticed that something was off. He wasn’t smiling. I took him off to the side and asked him a simple question: “Where’s your head at?” He looked at me for a few seconds before responding. “I don’t know. I just feel off.” That was not what I wanted to hear. When you’re sprinting down a track with a long fiberglass pole in your hands waiting to plant it in the ground, bend it, and then fling yourself upside down in the air, you don’t want to be off. But he was. And he kept bailing on his warm up runs. And then it happened. On his third attempt, he planted the pole. Except he didn’t go up. Thank the good Lord he didn’t hurt himself. Cause it would have been bad. We laughed it off. But we both knew. It’s dangerous when your head isn’t in the game. #polevault #trackandfield www.vaultermagazine.com
