Here’s why this works: People limited in internal rotation only have so much room to express their limited internal rotation. The purpose of the ball or object in between the knees is to bias the hips towards an externally rotated position. Weird, right? Well, bear with me. The pressure pushing against the ball or object is going to create an internal rotation force, but from a relatively externally rotated position. This allows you to genuinely express the limited hip internal rotation you do have. Now, we can modify this to demand more or less internal rotation by using a smaller or bigger object in between the thighs, respectively. People that have limited hip internal rotation often make the mistake of forcing their hips into way too much range of motion that they can’t access through traditional internal rotation mobility exercises or stretches. A better solution in the overwhelming majority of cases is to bias your hips towards external rotation and internally rotate from there. That will give you more space to express that real internal rotation that you’re looking for.
