I think they also just use the whole 5 point scale. like a 2.5 should be an average restaurant, 5 a perfect restaurant yet in North America McDonald's usually has like 3.7.

I think it’s cause in the US, we start are expectation at 5 stars and take one away when something doesn’t go our way. In Japan, they start at 1 and add on to that

i mean 3 stars should be the base in a 5 star system... so you can note if something is better then expected. americanised 5 star systems are pretty useless in showing good things

One thing I do like is that the scale is actually meaningful. I don't like the "5 Stars: Good, 4 Stars: Still good, anything worse: Terrible" we got over here.

This goes for hotels as well. First time i went to Japan i stayed in a three star hotel in Osaka. It was better than some of the five star hotels i've stayed at in Europe.

it's because in the western world, we use 1-2 stars vindictively and give 5 stars very subjectively. IE Ive seen large portions/decent service get 5s and great service/decent food get 5s.

Actually if u mean the Michelin Stars they only go from 1 to 3, only stars for hotels go from 1 to 5, which can be a bit confusing cuz lots of 3+ star hotels have restaurant too 😅
