When I was a child I could count on one hand the amount of moko kauae/ mata ora/ ta moko I’d see in our every day lives. Nowadays it’s everywhere. Beautiful to see. Same with our language. Having our tupuna being told not to speak Te Reo set our language back and in many cases stopped it being handed down to the next generation. The implementation of Kohanga Reo over the years has changed that and the resurgence of Te Reo has influenced it to spoken by mainstream media presenters and many tauiwi are now fluent! I love that! Don’t even get me started on land theft. Hoha! Get a job! Is one of the main arguments from anyone spouting their anti-Māori rhetoric during the lead up and execution of this activation. Hard to believe but Māori can manage holding employment while also participating in this hikoi. We have come a long way to reclaim our culture & language, and to ensure our countries founding document is honoured, yet we still face ridicule from people that just don’t have the capacity to understand. You’ll never silence us! We’re just getting started baby!
