@pbsnews: Tensions grow at US campuses across the country Tensions are high on University campuses across the country as pro-Palestinian rallies held in solidarity with a Columbia University demonstration spread. Students activists pitched tents on the university’s south lawn last week calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war among other other demands. On Thursday, Columbia’s president Nemat “Minouche” Shafik requested the NYPD remove the students after they were suspended for refusing to disperse for what she said were violations of university policies. Isra Hirsi, the daughter of Democratic representative Ilhan Omar, was one of more than 100 students who were suspended and arrested. Citing fears of harassment and alleged calls of violence, a rabbi who works for Columbia called on hundreds of Jewish students to return home. But leaders of the pro-Palestinian protest maintain they have been peaceful.
