I used to be a hand hold guy and then I realized everyone has different size hands. So I never knew where my vaulters were holding on the pole. I'd get answers like "I'm holding 5 hands down from the top" or "im holding 2 hands and 3 fingers up from the warning sticker." Consistency is a very important part of our sport. We all have different size hands and fingers. We all eyeball grip changes differently so how do we ever know if we're griping in the same spot? We don't... When I was vaulting with Steve and Caroline White of flight deck athletics they measured and marked their poles in 1 inch increments on every pole. They had an easy solution to my problem and shortly after I followed suit Now instead of "Move up a hand hold" I say "Move up 3 inches." Instead of "Move up a finger" its "Take an inch of grip." What I've found for me personally and with my athletes is that they know where to grip when making pole changes, they know where to grip on each pole (thanks to journaling too) and they feel confident making grip changes. Most importantly, we had an accurate number where we wanted to hold so we could minimize variables. Long story short, I grew up a hand hold guy so I still catch myself saying "Move up a hand hold" from time to time. But since my poles are marked my athletes catch me and say "Hand hold? Do you want 2 or 3 inches?" Consistency is king and a tape measure is more consistent than eyeballing a hand hold. Read this!)Speed is the most important aspect of the pole vault. Its the gun powder to your cannon! More gunpowder equals more better. With that said, how you train is extremely important where the focus should always be on speed! Pole vaulting alone can help you get faster, but dedicating time off the runway to work on your speed will help you get really fast so you can destroy your personal records! Here's two ideas! 1. Jump in with the short sprint crew and do their workouts at least twice a week. They're the fastest people on your team for a reason! They'll help you get faster! 2. I've got pole vault speed training programs over at Team-Hoot.com that are more pole vault specific but still train you like a sprinter! Either way, pole vaulters need speed, and speed is built off the pole vault runway! Hope this helps!
