Investment portfolio is the way to go. Doesn’t make sense to spend most of that money and only have two investments to show for it. Especially if they don’t earn enough profit to cover the lifestyle

Actually in canada it makes sense to pay off mortgage as thry don’t have fixed rates. In US with 2.5% interest rate for 30 years, the bank gave you basically free money. Never pay off early.

Keep the current house as a rental put some money down on the next house. Have the rental pay most of the new mortgage put the rest in investments.
