The spinal cord runs inside the vertebral column and gives off spinal nerve roots. Each spinal nerve root exits through the intervertebral foramen (a space between two adjacent vertebrae). At each level, the nerve root passes very close to the intervertebral disc. Because of this close relation, any problem in the disc (degeneration, bulging, prolapse) can directly affect the nerve root. Intervertebral Disc and Compression The intervertebral disc lies between two vertebral bodies and acts as a cushion/shock absorber. It has a soft inner core (nucleus pulposus) and a tough outer ring (annulus fibrosus). With age or injury, the disc may degenerate, bulge, or herniate (prolapse). When the disc protrudes backwards or sideways, it may compress the adjacent nerve root in the intervertebral foramen. Disc Prolapse and Nerve Compression Disc prolapse (herniated disc) occurs when the nucleus pulposus pushes out through a tear in the annulus fibrosus. This material presses against the spinal nerve root or sometimes the spinal cord itself. The compression causes: Pain (radicular pain along the distribution of that nerve root, e.g., sciatica). Numbness or tingling in the affected dermatome. Weakness in the muscles supplied by that nerve (myotome). Reflex changes (decreased or absent reflexes in that segment). Sequelae of Chronic Nerve Compression If untreated or severe, long-term nerve compression may lead to: Persistent radicular pain (chronic sciatica, brachialgia). Motor weakness → muscle wasting, paralysis in severe cases. Sensory loss in affected areas. Autonomic dysfunction (in severe lumbar compression → bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction). In cervical or lumbar severe cases → myelopathy or cauda equina syndrome (medical emergency). So In short Spinal nerves exit through intervertebral foramina. A prolapsed disc can compress these nerve roots, leading to pain, weakness, numbness, and, if persistent, permanent neurological deficits. #disc #spinalcordinjuryrecovery #vertebrae #chronicpain #pain
