since you're new to this. I would part it first to make sure they are as even as possible and put the gel on the braid as you braid it. make sure the hair is detangled before braiding.

Most of the time when I braid my daughters hair , I have to blow her hair out , part it in the sections I wanna braid , braid one section at a time and add gel to one section at a time for neatness

if you want them even part the hair in half from ear to ear. Then part the braid from front to nape of her hair. That way it's even ans not skinny in the back. Do it dry. gel as you go. not too much.
