The most overlooked and often first error point is not explicitly, directly, and intentionally teaching your expectations, processes and procedures. Yes, I know it's boring (but it doesn't have to be!) and not what you want to do in your first few weeks back. But if you want a smooth year, use this plan: Week 1: Every day, deliver full lessons on your expectations, processes, and procedures (explicit and direct) just like any other standard. Treat it like they’re testing on it! Spend at least 45-50 minutes on these lessons. Week 2: Review those expectations, processes, and procedures (bell work, DNA, exit tickets, pop quizzes, Blooket—whatever!) for 15-20 minutes max. Weeks 3-4: Review only 2-3 days of the week. Keep lessons/activities under 15 minutes. Make the reviews fun and interactive. Weeks 5-9: Every Friday, have a pop quiz or review game going over the expectations, processes, and procedures. Keep it under 10 minutes. Every month after: Have random review days, especially after long weekends and breaks. Sprinkle them in as needed. Magic ingredient: Whatever you teach, stand on it! Follow those expectations, processes, and procedure rules non-stop. Never give up. Be graceful but don’t be neglectful!
