It’s been five years since 235 men stood in a circle and began taking steps that would transform the world. With each step they took, they stripped away the shame surrounding the things that had happened to them. They made themselves vulnerable and admitted the trauma that they had endured. They stepped out of the darkness of the shame that had ruled their lives. They stepped into the light of community, forgiveness, and empathy. As their courageous act and their stories began to spread, so did the light of the knowledge that they discovered that day. We are not alone! Regardless of any external differences, we are all dealing with many of the same things. Trauma doesn’t distinguish or discriminate. It can take any of us down a dark path if left unchecked. But, even in the darkest of times and circumstances, it is community that allows us to heal. By taking these steps, they showed us the way to heal the most divided communities. They simply looked at the other men who ended up in the middle of that circle with them and said, “I see you. I understand you. I am you.” Once their remarkable actions were seen by people in the community, that light began shining brighter and brighter, until no one could ignore it. They took the steps that led so many others to understand that they were not alone. On this fifth anniversary of the Step Inside The Circle documentary, we want to express our deepest appreciation for these trail blazers that started a movement that has had such an impact on the world.
