The Haitian Flag is an important symbol for the people of Haiti because it commemorates their momentous fight for freedom. In May 1803, amidst the Haitian Revolution, Haitian military leaders designed a new flag to demonstrate their freedom and unify their people. After a historic victory over the French, Haiti declared its independence and became the first country to ever free itself from slavery.
