LONG POST but IDGAF cuz it’s important lol #TBT: My FB memories reminded me that today is the 13 yr anniversary of my debut music video for When I Go feat. Zip, off my first album, “Open Mic, Open Heart” 🥹 As I’ve gathered all of these meaningful clips, I’ve also gathered a number of thoughts to help summarize the immense gratitude I have surrounding this song: • This was my very FIRST music video EVER, my very first time working with the wonderful Jovan Landry & Jessica Estelle Huggins on directing & shooting. This was a hectic & hot day in Chicago but was some of the most fun I’d ever had & would go on to have with this unit for a number of projects & vids that followed (team JJB 4ever!) S/O to all of the amazing child actors, including Mackenzie Franklin who played a young “B,” & Judaea Brown who’d go on to star in The Chi 🎬 • This was my first time working with a featured artist for my own work & Zip remains one of the coolest, most down to earth emcees I’ve ever had the pleasure to collab with! 🔥 • Since its 2012 release, this remains my most successful song to date with 90k+ ORGANIC streams on SoundCloud alone. No bots, no stream farms, no label, no team, just good music from an M-Audio midi board & Logic Pro 9 that folks appreciate 💪🏾 • I have a lifelong pursuit of becoming a WORLD. RENOWNED. ARTIST. This path is discouraging AF but one of the most meaningful symbols of my artistic reach is the fact that there are literally TONS of videos of ppl from Toyko, Taiwan, Bei Jing, Norway, & places all over the world dancing to THIS song. Something I made is bringing international joy & I burst into tears every time I see new videos under the sound! 😩🙌🏾 As I lock in on the next phase of creative output, looking back at my small but large wins is so humbling. Immensely grateful to all these amazing creatives who’ve sewn into the success of this song/video. My prayer is to have an international tour one day & be able to perform & meet all of these amazing folks in person, & maybe join in on one of their dance classes foe da one time. & no matter what, I know somebody is out there watching/listening. —Now somebody pls book me so I can finally use this passport 😂🙏🏾💜🎵✨
