Call T-Mobile and ask for temporary unlock. They can unlock for 2 months. I do it every time when I travel.

I thought a law was passed where cell phone providers cannot lock your phone passed 90 days. Am I missing something?

The carrier is not permitted to withhold normal functions of the hardware unless you have done something in violation of your contract. Such as not pay your bill. So…. Their refusal to allow you to add an esim based on their promotional contract is definitely in violation of THEIR contracts with apple. I would try to deal with this through apple first. And if that does not give you a solution, legal action needs to be taken. I realize this is older and may not be an issue for OP anymore. But I am roy interested in knowing if anyone else has encountered this conflict.

It’s because your phone is tie to your wireless contractor. If you go to Apple and buy a phone you won’t have this issue because you’re not getting the phone at a discount. Other countries people

They didn’t tell you when you bought the phone that it doesn’t have a physical SIM? When I bought mine they told me because I had to activate my eSIM

I work at T-Mobile and I’m not sure what sales rep you spoke to but they misinformed you. Typically you can get your device unlocked. eSIM included for 90 days max when you are out the country.

Have you tried T-Mobile. They have a good international plan. Very low cost and little additional fees. 🙂🙂🙂

This is not true, I have a 14 Pro Max, no physical sim, and my phone still is not paid off but I went to Europe for three weeks last year to multiple countries and had zero problems with my phone.

The eSIM aspect shouldn’t matter. You’re having this problem because it’s locked. No? This would be the same if it had a SIM card slot on a locked phone.

Girlie it’s not all USA iPhones, it’s setting up your plan that way. You gotta pay it all upfront to fully own it and therefore let them unlock it for you 🙂

Even if you have the version with a physical SIM, if you haven’t paid the phone off, you can’t use a different SIM. I’m a tmo customer and this happened to me in Ireland. I ended up buying a cheap…

Ran into the same issue when going to Japan. But found out that ATT has a an international plan that is only $10 extra per day up to I think 5 days and then it’s just a that same $50 for the rest of the billing month! Keep your same phone number and data plan!
