@faternise: Over the weekend #oprah collaborated with WeightWatchers and hosted a three hour online special about diet culture and weight loss. During the program Oprah spoke about her history of internalised fatphobia and how over the years she used her platform to promote toxic diet culture. “Through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years, through online, I’ve been a major contributor to it [diet culture],” says Oprah. The livestream also featured a conversation between author, entrepreneur and body acceptance advocate @Katie Sturino and Weight Watchers CEO Sima Sistani. Weeks earlier Sturino called out the CEO for refusing to apologise for Weight Watchers’ years of fatphobia. “What I can speak to is who we are now and who we are going to be moving forward and part of that is acknowledging the past,” said Sima Sistani during the program, “seeing and hearing your experience and that you had come away from our program with hurt and pain that’s not okay, it’s not okay for even one person to feel that way.” Sistani said although this program “worked for so many people,” she understands “Weightwatchers led and contributed to diet culture.” “Many people who walked away feeling that it was their moral failing, that it was their own fault - to all of those people I say I’m sorry, that was not okay and we know better now ,” says Sistani, “biology is a big part of how people live in their bodies, it’s not just choice, it’s your genetics.” It’s important to note: back in February Oprah announced she would be leaving WeightWatchers after almost a decade on the board. Following this announcement Oprah confirmed she had been using weight loss drugs and even hosted a TV special dedicated to the medications.
