🚨A rant you need to read. Yes, it’s 2025 — and we’re still having to explain the basics of service dog rights.🤦‍♀️ For those who don’t know: My dog Bailey is a trained cardiac alert and PTSD service dog. She’s not a therapy dog. She’s not an emotional support animal. She’s a working dog — which means she is considered medical equipment under the ADA and is legally allowed to accompany me anywhere that I go. That includes: ✅ My place of employment, hospitals, schools, courtrooms, restaurants, church, sporting events, concerts ✅ Planes, buses, trains, ships, Ubers ✅ Yes, even the ER, ICU and pre-op, recovery, etc. The only place she can't go is into the OR. There are no certifications for service dogs. NONE. There is no national ID registry. Those things don’t exist under the law. (And honestly? I WISH there were a governing body — because what I experienced today is exactly why we need one.) Today, I walked into my daughter’s pediatrician’s office — a place we’ve gone to for 7 years — and was immediately stopped by a very rude and nasty receptionist. She huffed and rolled her eyes at me as soon as we walked in. Then DEMANDED to see “proof of certification” for my dog. I calmly explained that such a certification doesn’t exist. I even offered my ID card that shows Bailey’s training organization and contact info — which, again, I’m not even required to show. Still, I was told after she flung the card back at me and shooed her hands at me, to go wait in my car. Let me be clear: 🚫 I wasn’t asked. I was dismissed. She DEMANDED we wait outside. 🚫 I wasn’t disrupting anyone. The lobby was nearly empty. Only one family there at the end of the day and they were admiring Bailey from across the room. Clearly not even remotely bothered by her. 🚫 Bailey was clean, quiet, and clearly vested as always. Then, when we were finally called back, the doctor herself asked, “Well, aren't you the trailblazer today? What should we do if someone has a serious allergy and doesn’t want to be around your dog? Corporate doesn't want so this service animal stuff in here...” 🤯 Here’s my answer — and I say this with all the respect I can muster: 👉 Well, I don't want all this disability stuff but here I am. Living with it. If someone has an allergy, that’s something they need to manage. My service dog is not optional. She’s a medical necessity. Just like no one would ask a person in a wheelchair to leave because someone “might trip,” we don’t remove service dogs to make someone else more comfortable. If this were an airplane, they’d be the one asked to reschedule — not me. And let’s not forget — my daughter watched this whole thing unfold. She’s seven. She asked me if we did something wrong. We didn’t. That’s what breaks my heart and utterly pisses me off at the same time. Here’s the bottom line: It is ridiculous that in 2025, legitimate service dog teams like mine still walk into restaurants, offices, and even medical clinics only to be questioned, doubted, and dismissed. It’s exhausting to have to educate people — especially professionals — who should already know better. I walk into the VA clinic with zero issues.... but the pediatrician has an issue with it. Even worse? The number of people we have to encounter who think they get to determine whether my medical equipment is “necessary enough.” The fact that I even have to explain myself in the first place. Let’s be real — you can spot a real service dog team from across the room. Five seconds. That’s all it takes. Well-behaved. Task-focused. Clearly working. We work in unison. Beautifully. The snarling, build a bear chihuahua riding in the shopping cart or the barking and pulling the leash poodle is NOT a service dog. I’m sick of having to explain my rights. It’s 2025. You have the internet in your pocket. There is no excuse for ignorance anymore. Do better. Learn the law. And stop making life harder for those of us already doing the best we can just to get through the day. #servicedog #fyp #foryou #tiktok
