@davesengines: Saving BIG $$$ on your Duramax engine and preventing future failures by getting rid of the dowel pin #duramax #duramaxdiesel #duramaxtrucks #enginebuild #enginerepair
the problem is people work on them and don't torque the balancer.

Factory square key would have been best. High torque value on balancer is only a mediocre solution to keep dowel from shearing. Still.. not a guarantee like a square key. Retired toolmaker...

It’s just common sense more surface area for the pulley ect than a small pin

Only reason dowel pin failure happens is when the harmonic balencer isn’t torqued to 278 ft lbs.

it is good insurance on a rebuilt engine.
but could recommend taking the bolt out and put a few drops of lock tight on the threads and torquing it for high mile engines.

Much rather have a key way than dowel pins regardless of the torque spec/procedure.

So take your truck into a shop to have torn apart that way you won’t maybe have to take your truck into a shop and have it torn apart

Keyways and pins are only for location. It’s the bolt torque that’s insufficient

Only an issue when improper maintenance is preformed…

Do you suggest having this repair done preemptively? If so at what mileage?

Do you sell a keyway machined crankshaft

No they don’t have a problem. That pin is not for holding the balancer it’s for location purposes only . Improperly torqued crank bolt causes those pins to shear off

Are they intentional shear pins or bad engineering?

Are you recommending that we bring a new truck to you to do this? If so what is the approximate cost?
