Oshiro Hajime, who paid a courtesy visit to Acting Mayor Hon. Sebastian Z. Duterte at The Royal Mandaya Hotel. The visit was a symbolic and strategic moment, celebrating decades of historical ties between the people of Okinawa and Davao and opening new doors for future cooperation in trade, tourism, labor, and cultural exchange. In his message, Vice Governor Oshiro expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the warm reception and the opportunity to be in Davao for the first time. He acknowledged the deep cultural and historical connection between Okinawans and Davaoeños, forged during World War II and sustained across generations. This enduring bond, he noted, is celebrated annually through the Iresai, a cultural and commemorative tradition that brings Okinawan families back to Davao to honor their ancestors. This year’s delegation was particularly meaningful, composed of 30 members including a 98-year-old participant—testament to the lasting emotional ties many Okinawans hold for Davao. The group visited key memorial sites, including the Okinawa Monument at Mintal Cemetery, where they paid tribute to their forebears. Vice Governor Oshiro conveyed his sincere gratitude to the City Government of Davao for preserving this historic site with dignity and respect. The Vice Governor also expressed hope for broader collaboration in the years ahead, particularly in offering opportunities for young Filipinos from Davao to live, work, or study in Okinawa, enriching cross-cultural understanding and deepening bilateral ties. Acting Mayor Duterte warmly welcomed the Okinawan delegation, underscoring the honor of hosting a senior official from a region so deeply woven into Davao’s multicultural history. He remarked on the shared spirit of resilience between Davao and Okinawa—both regions rising from adversity to shape vibrant, forward-looking communities. He emphasized Davao City’s openness to greater cooperation and expressed his personal interest in visiting Okinawa in the near future, captivated by its rich culture and natural beauty. The Acting Mayor also highlighted the potential benefits of establishing direct air connectivity between Davao and Okinawa, which would significantly strengthen tourism, economic exchange, and people-to-people links. He assured the Okinawan delegation that they will always be welcome in Davao—not just as visitors, but as friends and extended family. Joining the courtesy call were key city officials: Atty. Rachel Zozobrado, Councilor and Chairperson of the SP Committee on International Relations; Hon. Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, Councilor and Chairperson of the SP Committee on Trade, Commerce and Industry, and Tourism and Beautification; Hon. Ragde Niño Ibuyan, Councilor and Chairperson of the SP Committee on Government Enterprises and Privatization; Ms. April Marie C. Dayap, Officer-in-Charge of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC); and Mr. Harvey James Lanticse, Officer-in-Charge of the City Information Office (CIO) This visit marks not only a continuation of goodwill but a renewal of purpose—towards cultivating partnerships that transcend generations. As Davao and Okinawa look to the future, they do so as kindred communities, bound by shared history and a mutual desire to build a more connected, compassionate, and collaborative tomorrow. #davaocityinvestmentpromotioncenter #dcipc #DavaoLifeIsHere #DabawenyoDCplinado #dabawenyo
