Having a greenhouse is such a great way to extend your growing season! I personally choose to take the plastic off every summer and then re-cover in the fall. I finally made the move to sand and so far I love it! I’ve used other beddings like horse pellets, pine shavings, and straw but so far it’s my favorite. 5️⃣ Reasons to use coarse all purpose sand in your coop: 🧼 Superior Hygiene: Scientific studies, including those from Auburn University, have shown that sand has lower bacterial counts, fungal populations, and moisture levels compared to materials like pine shavings. This is because sand is inorganic and contains few nutrients for bacteria, leading to a cleaner environment for chickens. 💦 Effective Moisture Control: Sand drains well and evaporates moisture rapidly, keeping the coop dry. This dryness is crucial in preventing the growth of harmful organisms such as coccidia, which thrive in warm, damp environments. 🧹 Ease of Cleaning: Droppings on sand can be easily removed using a scoop or rake, much like cleaning a cat’s litter box. This daily maintenance keeps the coop clean with minimal effort. 😷 Health Benefits for Chickens: Sand doesn’t stick to chickens’ feet, reducing the risk of footpad dermatitis and other infections.
