One of my favourite places to visit in all of Canada 🇨🇦 Moraine Lake ✨ It is no secret to the world that this lake is stunning and one of the most visited in the Banff area. But here are some fun facts you might not have learned yet! 1. Moraine Lake, located in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, was discovered in the late 19th century by Walter Wilcox, an early explorer and mountaineer. He named it “Moraine” after the glacial deposits, called moraines, that helped form the lake. 2. Lake Louise Railway Line: Moraine Lake gained popularity in the early 20th century when the Canadian Pacific Railway built the Lake Louise railway line in 1890, which brought tourists closer to the region, making it more accessible and drawing more attention to its striking beauty. 3. The lake became a Canadian cultural icon when its image was featured on the reverse side of the Canadian twenty-dollar bill during the 1969–1979 series, known as the “Scenes of Canada” series. This gave Moraine Lake the nickname “Twenty Dollar View.” 4. Glacial Origins: Moraine Lake was formed by the melting of glaciers. The lake sits in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, and its vivid turquoise color is due to the refraction of light off rock flour—tiny particles of rock that are continuously fed into the lake by surrounding glaciers. 5. First Lodge Built: In 1912, the first Moraine Lake Lodge was constructed, providing accommodation for early tourists. Over the years, the lodge has been rebuilt and upgraded, but it remains one of the few structures near the lake, offering a tranquil retreat in the wilderness. 6. UNESCO World Heritage Site: In 1984, Moraine Lake and Banff National Park became part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation recognizes its global significance for natural beauty and biodiversity, protecting the area for future generations to enjoy.
