I think a lot of it is sequels/reboots of existing series that make watching new movie feel inaccessible if you haven’t seen the 5 before it! New IP feels so much more inviting

Cost + streaming + there’s no good stories worth “experiencing” + strangers don’t like being together anymore

The experience of going is so inconsistent. Theaters are not making an effort to be clean or have adequate staff

Anecdotally it feels like since Solo MDW is an awful time to release. First weekend of “summer” in many places, people are outside.

I used to go the movies at least once a week. I would watch whatever was playing because it was cheap enough to take the risk if I didn’t end up liking it. Now it’s too expensive and cinema etiquette has gone out the window.

I thought Furiosa very mid. 30 min of trailers and ads before. Watched on a 270 screen and my tv has better definition. I used to go to the cinema 3 times a week and now I go every 3 months because...

Huge fan of The Big Picture, although for some reason despite loving all the topics on The Town I am often annoyed by the host

I think it's important to ask why Apes did well while Mad Max didn't despite their similar circumstances (post apocalyptic, female lead, legacy movies).

This is kind of the combined effect of COVID, strikes, studios going all-in on streaming, and theaters REFUSING to reduce concession prices. But ya can’t kill film. It’ll bounce back

I am truly thinking that the “industry” is dying. I think there will still be films but the systems that built it might be on their way out :/ I don’t think this is the normal ebb and flow of hllywd
