I highly recommend table top rpg character questionnaires. "The Mother of all character questionnaires" is a great one. lots of good questions to figure out motivations and stuff.

I select a theme. Fire, water, forest, city, beach, neon lights, smoke, solitude.... Whatever it is I know what that character feels and their aesthetic.
