Let’s teach our children that along with land acknowledgments for these lands we must offer our understanding that Indigenous women, men, girls & boys traditionally grow their hair long. We mindfully grow it for special reasons. Hair is sacred. There is no reasons for them to be gender misrepresented because your colonial ideals of men having short hair should apply to all races of humanity. Educate your children so they know that the Indigenous boy has long hair for deeply important reasons. His braid represents spirit, and connection to all aspects of being past and present. A wise warrior spirit. A connection to Earth. Meditative thought process. Prayers within each turn of the tsii’yeel and braid. Let’s normalize these facts so that future generations may be comfortably knowing there is understanding. Stop tokenizing my child in front of his peers. It’s too much pressure for any child to have to do this sort of emotional work everyday on behalf of his sacred hair..
