I went through the same thing, it was stress. I'm sorry to say that he never grew out of it. I closed doors to rooms and added the extra litter boxes.

Ok, hear me out…. Look into a cat psychic. My friend did this for her cat that was peeing inside out of nowhere and found the solution. I know it sounds bonkers.
