I would say that it's only bad when you tell them we don't have the money for it then buy something that 10x more expensive for yourself

Agree with the lady. If I was a kid I would just start asking for less things maybe try and sell stuff to help. Telling them no would be better than why.

My opinion as a kid who has been told it’s not on the budget multiple times with a single parent: it makes you feel extremely guilty to ask for anything at any moment. It also makes you feel like

My parents would say we didn't have the money for it and honestly that's helped me manage my money now. Whenever I see something I hear them say "we don't have the money for that"

I went to look at shoes with my 8yo. I found a pair, then put them back. Son asked why & I said we didn’t have the $ right now. His eyes got wide& he said

My kids know that daddy gets paid on Friday. If they want something, within reason, Itell them that they can get it the weekend after he gets paid. They also understand that we have bills and

A lot of my generation grew up with fear of money and finance. My terrible mother told me multiple times if she bought me a Star Wars figure we would end up in the poor house.

I talk to my kid about budgets all the time. I even say things like just cause we can afford it doesn’t mean we should when that money could go towards this other thing that would bring more joy etc

The only reason I could see for the “don’t say we can’t afford” is that it does put the kid in an adult situation where it’s something out of their control but also don’t lie to your kids
