This type of lightning occurs in the atmosphere surrounding a very large nuclear detonation, usually a thermonuclear detonation. It seems to only occur near ground level detonations. It is thought to be caused by intense ionization radiation (X-rays and Gamma rays), which then cause an accumulation of negative charges flowing from the ground into the atmosphere. This might be why it only occurs near ground level nuclear detonations. This footage is from the Ivy Mike shot, the United States first (and worlds first) large scale thermonuclear test.
