Hellgrammites are the larval form of a group of large winged insects known as dobsonflies (𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦), which are notorious for their exceptionally large mandibles. During their larval state, hellgrammites live like most larvae of other large winged insects, like dragonflies or damselflies, growing & developing underwater (sometimes for years). They’ll prey on small invertebrates, fish, or anything really that swims a little too close to wherever they may be bunkered down.
