Random but when I was Mormon the boys would go to boys camp and river raft, do survival stuff, ect. And the girls would go to Heber Valley and learn how to fold fitted sheets

Iron wasn’t smelted then but it was very likely that they used exposed or meteorite iron. And with steel, it could’ve been made from heated and hammered pig-iron or never-molten iron
