In August 1969, members of the Black Berets of Homewood led a protest march against racial discrimination in construction jobs on Fifth Avenue in Oakland. Racial Discrimination in Construction: Historically, the construction industry in Pittsburgh, like in many parts of the country, had a history of excluding African Americans from skilled trade union jobs and denying them equal opportunities in employment, according to Rivers of Steel and the Urban Institute. Homewood, a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, experienced significant demographic shifts during this period, with a large influx of African American residents, many displaced from other areas of the city. This led to a concentration of African American families in the area and a heightened awareness of racial inequalities. The Black Berets of Homewood's protest was part of a larger movement of African American activists challenging racial discrimination in employment and other areas. For example, Nate Smith, a former boxer and heavy equipment operator, formed the Black Construction Coalition and Operation Dig to train and advocate for African American construction workers in Pittsburgh. Similar protests against discrimination in the construction trades were also happening in other cities, such as Chicago, led by figures like Jesse Jackson. The Black Berets of Homewood's protest in August 1969 highlighted the ongoing struggle against racial discrimination and the demand for equal opportunities for African Americans in the construction industry in Pittsburgh. #blackhistory #fypシ゚ #blackhistorytiktok #fypシ #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp
