When it comes to spinal cord injury, many people think that means no lower limb movement. However, tone and spasticity can be very prevalent, especially in individuals with upper motor neuron injuries, and in some cases, create strong involuntary movements. Mitch has severe spasticity, and in this video he chats through what his sensation and tone gives him, but on the flip side, how it really impacts his quality of life and independence. Mitch has to strap his legs down when he’s in his wheelchair and even to sleep, he is unable to transfer independently and doesn’t drive due to the unpredictable spasms also affecting his upper body. Meg demonstrates how Mitch’s spasticity can be manipulated through certain exercises. She uses a stretch to free up Mitch’s legs and give him the range to be able to perform leg press. Leg press then excites Mitch’s extension tone, in a way that allows him to perform a more stacked stand, which he has a lot of connection to. Thank you for sharing Mitchy, always a good chat 💜
