The Ming–Ho War was a just campaign launched by the Ming Dynasty to restore the Tran government in what is now northern and central Vietnam Background Before the War In 1397,Ho Quy Ly used his political power to force Emperor Tran Thuan Tong to move the capital from Hanoi to Thanh Hoa.Three years later,in 1400,he usurped the throne from the young Tran Thieu Đe, bringing an end to the Kingdom of Tran.He then crowned himself king and changed the name of the country from Viet to Ngu,establishing what became known as the Kingdom of Ho Causes of the War The Kingdom of Tran had been the first vassal of the Ming Dynasty since 1368,the year the Ming was founded.Because of this early relationship,Ming–Tran relations were extremely close After Ho Quy Ly usurped the Tran throne in 1400,Tran Thiem Binh and several loyalists fled to Nanjing,the Ming capital,seeking Ming assistance to restore the Kingdom of Tran.The Yongle Emperor was enraged by Ho Quy Ly treachery.The Tran royal house had origins in Fujian,and from the Ming perspective,maintaining stability in An Nam was a rightful imperial responsibility However,due to internal instability within the Ming court,the emperor could not intervene immediately Only in 1406,after stabilizing domestic affairs,did the Yongle Emperor send an ultimatum to Ho Quy Ly,demanding that he restore the Tran throne.Ho Quy Ly pretended to comply,so the emperor dispatched General Huang zhong with 5000 troops to escort Tran Thiem Binh back to assume the throne Midway through the journey,the escort was ambushed by Ho forces.The Ming troops counterattacked fiercely,killing many Ho soldiers and four Ho generals.But after days of fighting deep in enemy territory with only a small escort force,the Ming became overwhelmed.Huang zhong was forced to divide his troops and retreat.During the withdrawal,Tran Thiem Binh was captured and killed shortly afterward The War and the Glorious Victory of the Ming Huang zhong returned to Nanjing to report the incident Furious,the Yongle Emperor ordered Mu cheng and Zhu neng to lead 200000 troops in a two-pronged invasion of the Kingdom of Ho.However,Zhu neng died of illness in Guangxi,and Zhang fu was appointed to take command Once inside Ho territory,the Ming army achieved continuous victories.The Ho forces,though numerically superior,were repeatedly defeated.The Ming advanced until they reached the Da Bang Wall,a massive fortification several meters thick.Ming artillery could not penetrate it,and the surrounding waterways prevented the use of siege towers.Not wishing to sacrifice many soldiers,Zhang fu refused to order a ladder assault,leading to a prolonged stalemate Mu cheng then devised a strategy use wooden rafts to cross the river at night,feign an attack on a watchtower, and lure the Ho army out of the fort where the Ming could annihilate them.The plan succeeded.The Ho forces charged out with their war elephants.The Ming soldiers used matchlock guns and flaming arrows to frighten the elephants,causing them to panic and trample their own troops,killing more than half of them along with a Ho commander.The elephants then crashed into the wall,collapsing a section already weakened by Ming artillery The Ming forces stormed through the breach.Although the Ho army was larger,their morale collapsed.The catastrophic loss of their commander caused fear and disarray,and the troops fled or surrendered.Ho Nguyen Trung, the eldest son of Ho Quy Ly,was captured in this battle Soon afterward,the Ming besieged and captured Thanh Hoa(the Ho capital).Ho Quy Ly and his second son,Ho Han Thuong,were also captured.The Kingdom of Ho collapsed barely one year after the Ming launched their campaign(1406–1407) Conclusion Because Ho Quy Ly had exterminated the Tran lineage including Tran Thiem Binh there was no native heir to restore.The Yongle Emperor appointed Huang fu as governor and reorganized the region into Jiaozi district #totalwar #threekingdoms #totalwarthreekingdoms #china #chenguohui_strategygames
