In my opinion,I say yes because you could atleast go to the child’s funeral and plus you didn’t have a child at first so you wouldn’t be neglecting anything really but that’s my opinion

NTA. he was neglected, watched his sibling suffered & died. he didn't want his kids to suffer the same fate as both the healthy and especially as a sick child.

Short answer, yes. Hard things in life get thrown at us, but that does mean run or that you are excused because of past experiences. He could have been different from his parents.
