@feypop.com: pure roleplay games? sorta like guided improv. the mechanized rewards for roleplay discourse + rules lite praise discourse got me thinking! how far can we take it? #dnd #rpg #ttrpg #beggartok #gaming #indiedev
So I realize that I’m the exception here as an improv performer, but I’d really only do that on stage with other improvisers, where I’m being paid.

Yes! Don't Walk In Winter Wood does this! It's amazing!

I like to have some rules for structure, as an adult. but I am having the *time of my life* running Brindlewood Bay, which is very rules light comparatively. so.... maybe????

My kids got this from a Bluey episode and now we play all the time. We’ve expanded it to many genres including mech battles, heists, car chases, fantasy. It’s always over the top and cinematic and fun

Montsegur 1244, The King is Dead, Good Society are all ones I've played. That have limited or no rules.

So I wouldn't be a big fan of it in like a group setting, but that being said I absolutely love solo-ttrpg journaling style games like Thousand Year Old Vampire that really are only prompts!

we do, it's called improv if in person. there are a lot of groups that like to do it. online there are numerous chat rooms that do it. I don't consider them games though. it's just RP.

How close would you say Disco Elysium or the social links of Persona are to this idea? Is that way off of a game with no mechanics?

I know @Out Of Print GM already mentioned Fiasco. There is also Alice is Missing and use cards as prompt.

I wrote one of these, although it's maybe not as freeform as what you're describing?
(The Return of the Artemis 4, it's a space mystery game)

wanderhome has the flimsiest mechanics. playing it has changed the group forever, in a good way.

Yes, I used to play pretend all the time when I was a child before I played TTRPGs. Also slowly rolling out my Diceless RPG videos.

I want it but mechanics act as a support on putting that towel cape on

It’s called Life and it sucks. Session 0 takes about 18 years with too much down time.

A lot of people have mentioned fiasco - but I also wanna mention For the Queen. We have played it so many times over the past couple years and it’s a blast every time.

The problem with that free form type of play is that it usually becomes to predictable for my taste. Mechanics bends the story in directions people around the table could not forsee.

This would be ideal. The allure of RPGs for me is shared improvisational storytelling, and a lot of the time, the rules just get in the way of that.
